Expedition Overview
Journey deep into the surreal landscapes of the Bolivian Altiplano. This comprehensive 3-day, 2-night expedition takes you far beyond the blinding white expanse of the Uyuni Salt Flats. Venture south into the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve to witness colorful high-altitude lagoons, flocks of wild flamingos, bubbling volcanic geysers, painted deserts, and relaxing thermal hot springs.
The Route
Day 1: The Great Salt Flats & Incahuasi
Start your expedition exploring the historic Train Cemetery and the salt processing village of Colchani. Drive into the heart of the majestic Salar de Uyuni to capture perspective photos and visit the towering cacti of Incahuasi Island. End the day watching the sunset before checking into a unique Salt Hotel for the night.
Day 2: Andean Lagoons & Flamingos
Travel south through the Chiguana Desert, stopping at the Ollagüe Volcano viewpoint. The highlight of the day is the "Route of the Jewels"—visiting the Cañapa, Hedionda, and Ramaditas lagoons, home to three species of wild flamingos. Cross the Siloli Desert, photograph the famous Stone Tree (Árbol de Piedra), and arrive at the stunning Laguna Colorada before resting in a basic desert refuge.
Day 3: Geysers, Hot Springs & Return
Wake up before dawn to visit the Sol de Mañana geysers, standing at nearly 5,000 meters above sea level. Warm up with a morning soak in the Polques thermal hot springs. Continue through the surreal Salvador Dali Desert to view the breathtaking Laguna Verde at the base of the Licancabur Volcano. Begin the drive back, arriving in Uyuni town by approximately 5:30 PM (or arrange an optional transfer to San Pedro de Atacama, Chile).

Frequent Questions
What is the accommodation like on Night 2?
Because the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve is highly protected and remote, accommodations on the second night are basic mountain refuges. Rooms and bathrooms are shared, electricity is limited (often only available for a few hours in the evening), and there is usually no heating or Wi-Fi.
Do I need to bring a sleeping bag?
We highly recommend bringing or renting a sleeping bag. Temperatures in the high desert on the second night can plunge to -15°C (5°F) during the winter months (May - August). While the lodges provide blankets, a sleeping bag ensures you stay comfortably warm.
Can I finish the tour in Chile instead of returning to Uyuni?
Yes! On Day 3, instead of returning to Uyuni, we can drop you off at the Hito Cajón border crossing. From there, a pre-arranged shared transfer will take you directly into San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. Please select the "Transfer to Atacama" add-on when booking.
